Pena Wins Twice in NCCU’s Loss to Florida A&M

BOX SCORE

DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman Emily Pena tallied singles and doubles wins for host North Carolina Central University in a 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division women's tennis loss to visiting Florida A&M University Friday afternoon.

On a chilly and windy day at the NCCU Tennis Courts, the Rattlers prevailed in doubles and then won four singles matches in straight sets to pick up the league win. FAMU improved to 3-12 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Division.

Pena partnered with sophomore Jasmine Gabriel for a 6-2 triumph in the middle doubles battle. Pena and Gabriel improved to 3-4 as a tandem.

After sweeping the No. 3 doubles match, Arrice Robinson and Sophia Osabouhlen outlasted NCCU senior Lynsey Cover and junior Jamie Rogers, 7-5, in the top doubles flight to seal the first team point in favor of the Rattlers.

Pena continued her strong play by knocking off Osabouhlen at No. 5 singles. Her 7-5, 6-3 victory was the fourth of the season for Pena.

Rogers picked up the other maroon and gray win. Rogers was in a tight battle on court one leading 6-0, 1-6, 3-2 in the third set when Olivia Rolle had to retire from the match. Rogers leads the Lady Eagles with five wins.

NCCU (2-15, 1-3) quickly turns around and hosts Bethune-Cookman University on its Senior Day scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.
