Jasmine Gabriel picked up a pair of wins for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team in a 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division road loss at North Carolina A&T State University Thursday afternoon at the George C. Simkin Jr. Indoor Sports Pavilion at Barber Park.
The Aggies improved to 5-10 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC while the Lady Eagles slipped to 2-13 on the season and 1-2 in league skirmishes.
Gabriel won her singles match in a roller coaster three-set affair on the second court. She eventually knocked off sophomore Sheyla Ramirez by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-0. The victory was the fourth of the season for Gabriel.
Junior
Jamie Rogers was involved in another three-set battle in the No. 1 position in the Lady Eagles' lineup. However, junior Khalia Powell rallied to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
North Carolina A&T won the bottom four singles matches in straight sets to seal the team victory.
The maroon and gray opened up the day by winning the doubles point. Rogers and senior
Lynsey Cover toppled Ramirez and sophomore Angelica Martinez by a 6-2 margin while Gabriel and freshman
Emily Pena edged Powell and junior Nadia Hilton-Adams in a narrow 7-6 conquest.
Rogers and Cover stayed undefeated partnered together at 2-0 partnered together. Gabriel and Pena improved to 2-3 as a duo.
NCCU next visits Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
