Rattlers Step Past NCCU in Extras

DURHAM, N.C. – For the third consecutive conference series, North Carolina Central University played a game where it entered the final inning of regulation tied with its opponent, this time Florida A&M University grabbed a 5-4 decision in 10 innings at the Durham Athletic Park on Sunday, May 8.

NCCU (24-27, 11-13 MEAC) will be seeded third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Championship after wrapping up the Southern Division slate, and will face Delaware State University in the opening round of the tournament.

There were nine total runs scored in this contest, and seven of them came in the third inning.  FAMU (26-18, 16-5 MEAC) got its first three batters aboard in the top of the inning on a pair of walks, and then two singles from Alec Wong (Rockledge, Fla.) and Dylan Dillard (Kissimmee, Fla.) put the Rattlers ahead 3-0.

NCCU followed suit with three-straight singles that turned into RBI at-bats from the next four batters to send the home side in front 4-3.  Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) picked up a lead-off hit in that inning, and did so two other times in his first three at-bats and boosted a double as well to go 3-for-5.

Andrew Vernon (Raleigh, N.C.) was called in from the bullpen and used that opportunity to break the single season record for strikeouts as he fanned five batters to reach 76.

Dillard drove a double deep to right-center to tie the game at four in the fifth inning, and from that point on Sawyer Betts (Tallahassee, Fla.) held the Eagles hitless over six frames and faced the minimum allowing just a solitary walk to get the game to extra innings.

Dillard came through once more for FAMU when he knocked an RBI triple in the top of the 10th and that turned into the game winning run as Kendal Weeks (Quincy, Fla.) tallied his fifth save of the year to take the league lead.

NCCU finishes the season at home against Charleston Southern University for Senior Day at 6:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park and that game will be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network, available at NCCUEaglePride.com.  Live Twitter updates can also be found by following @NCCUAthletics.
