Zoe Ellis and football junior
Carl Jones were honored as the North Carolina Central University Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year during the annual NCCU Athletics awards ceremony, The Eddies, on Monday, May 2.
Ellis, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship in the indoor triple jump and earned a bronze medal in the long jump to claim a share of the Women's Outstanding Field Athlete at the MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. So far during the regular season, she has won three triple jump competitions (2 indoor, 1 outdoor) with four runner-up finishes.
Jones, from Nashville, Tennessee, started all 11 games at center for the MEAC co-champions. In 757 plays, the team captain graded out at 92 percent of blocking assignments with 63 pancake blocks, while only allowing one sack. Jones was named All-MEAC First Team as the league's top center and was announced to SBN Black College All-American Team, the BOXTOROW (HBCU) All-America Team, the HBCU Gameday FCS All-American Team and the Black College Sports Page "Baad Team" of Black College All-Americans (First Team).
The Chancellor's Award, presented to the student-athletes with the highest overall grade point average, was presented to baseball senior
James Dey with a 3.84 GPA to lead the men and softball senior
Jenny Tracy with a perfect 4.0 GPA to top the women.
