DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University has just three midweek games remaining, and will play two this week on the road at Elon University on Tuesday, April 26 and at home against Duke University on Wednesday, April 27.
The Eagles will have one more home midweek match against Charleston Southern University on Wednesday, May 11 to finish the regular season.
NCCU (21-22, 8-10 MEAC) will play Elon (19-22, 10-7 CAA) for the first time since 2009, and will see Duke (23-18, 9-12 ACC) for the second time since a loss earlier this season.
Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) has been critical as a leadoff man for the Eagles and is responsible for 41 runs scored, which is third-most in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He has also knocked 50 hits which is fourth in the league. Hopkins is hitting .329 and carries a team-best on base percentage of .437 with 11 stolen bases.
Elon comes into the game with NCCU on a four-game winning streak, including a weekend sweep of Colonial Athletic Association foe Hofstra University. Nick Zammarelli (Lincoln, R.I.) has been one of the better hitters for the Phoenix as he is in the top-10 of the power categories within the CAA. Zammarelli has hit seven home runs along with 19 doubles and a triple for 40 RBI and a slugging percentage of .571 with 96 total bases. He has collected 54 total hits and has a batting average of .321 with 39 runs scored.
Duke has won three of its last four games and the Blue Devils are coming off of a weekend series win at Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils won the last two games of the series by a combined score of 22-10, mainly on a 19-9 victory on Saturday, April 23.
Jimmy Herron (Harleysville, Pa.) has one of the top batting averages for the Blue Devils at .322 and leads the way in stolen bases with 15 swiped bags on 17 attempts. He has tallied 48 hits with 14 doubles and a triple, and is slugging .430 with an on base percentage of .416.
