DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –Close to six hours of total baseball was played with three extra innings, but Bethune-Cookman University stopped the clock in both games with two walkoff wins over North Carolina Central University, 2-1 and 3-2 on Saturday, April 23 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
NCCU (21-21, 8-9 MEAC) scored in the top of the first in both games and held a lead for at least five innings, and in both games B-CU (18-22, 11-6 MEAC) came back to tie and win in extra frames.
Zachary Marszal (Cary, Ill.) drove in the first run for the Eagles in game one, and NCCU made that run stand up through to the fifth inning until a solo home run from Demetrius Sims (Ann Arbor, Mich.) knotted the game.
The Eagles had an opportunity to take the lead in the closing moments of the game with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, but the Wildcat bullpen was able to tight rope out of the jam, even though it took two pitchers to do it.
NCCU had one more shot to pull ahead in the top of the 11th inning after Marszal leadoff with a single and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt, but he was left there. In the bottom of the frame the Wildcats loaded the bases, and then a ball hit deep into the hole to the shortstop resulted in a walkoff infield single to give B-CU the win in game one.
The second game started in a similar manner to game one with
Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) leading off with a single and coming in to score on a hit from Marszal, however this run was scored on an error. Hopkins led the way for the Eagles in the doubleheader with five hits and touched home twice out of NCCU's three total runs.
Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) gave the Eagles a two run cushion on an RBI single in the third inning, and NCCU carried a 2-0 advantage into the fourth inning. Sims stepped up and delivered an RBI single to halve the lead in the bottom of the fourth, then the Wildcats picked up back-to-back hits in the sixth and an RBI hit from Danny Rodriguez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) tied the game at 2-2.
After NCCU scored its second run in the third inning, the Wildcat pitching staff shut down the Eagle bats as they faced the minimum while allowing just two hits.
Andrew Vernon (Raleigh, N.C.) had strong outing on the mound for the Eagles as he went seven complete innings with just two earned runs and an impressive eight strikeouts. With those eight punchouts Vernon is now tied for second for most strikeouts in a single season in the modern era with 69.
While game one took two extra innings to decide a winner, game two just took one after Nathan Bond (Orlando, Fla.) lifted a ball deep to centerfield to bring in the winning run, similar to how NCCU beat the Wildcats in game three of the series in Durham earlier this season.
Game three of the weekend series will be played on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., and will be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network available at NCCUEaglePride.com. Live Twitter updates can be found by following @NCCUAthletics as well.
