SAVANNAH, Ga. – North Carolina Central University will travel to compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship on Thursday-Saturday, April 21-23 at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah, Georgia.
Seniors
Michael Wilson (Flint, Mich.),
Sumner Tate (Raleigh, N.C.) and
Jerome Bostwick (London, England), and sophomores
Zane Lewis (Sanford, N.C.) and
Jordan Bohannon (Southfield, Mich.) will be teeing off in the championship for the Eagles.
"As far as my expectations, we have progressed… we've gotten better," said NCCU golf head coach David Hinton. "Our last tournament was a setback in a way that we thought we would do better. It was a really tough course, but it actually made us grind a little bit better these last couple of weeks in practice to put on a good showing in the MEAC."
The fourth-year coach is referring to the squad's performance at the East Carolina Intercollegiate on April 4-5, when the Eagles posted their three worst team scores of the season and finished at the bottom of the 13-team tournament field.
Hinton is confident the group will bounce back. After all, this same unit broke the school record for the lowest team score in a round by posting a 289 at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Oct. 12. At the same event, the squad also edged the school record for low 54-hole team score with an 891, shaving one stroke off the old standard of 892 set back in the 2008-09 season.
Bohannon enters the conference championship with the team's best scoring average of 77.2 and a win percentage of .517. Lewis, who broke the NCCU record with a four-under-par 66 on Oct. 12, tops the Eagles with a win percentage of .529 and is second with a 77.7 scoring average.
"We're feeling good," Hinton said. "Our guys are hitting the ball well and we're scoring, so we're feeling optimistic."
NCCU placed fifth out of seven teams in the 2015 MEAC Championship and fourth out of six teams in 2014.
