Davide Callegari won a third-set superset to secure the only team point for visiting North Carolina Central University in a 6-1 loss to local foe Duke University on Easter Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
The Blue Devils, who knocked off fellow Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member University of Louisville early in the day, leveled their overall record to 10-10 with the triumph over the Eagles. NCCU lost its fourth straight road match to dip to 1-11.
Callegari toppled another fellow rookie in Duke's Adrian Chamdani. Callegari won the first set 6-3 before Chamdani answered with a 7-5 win in the second set. With the team victory already in favor of the Blue Devils, the two freshmen played a superset race to 10 points and Callegari dominated it winning 10 of 11 serves for his third singles wins of the season.
Sophomore
Kert Kilumets had the most difficult test for the Eagles playing the No. 19 nationally ranked singles player in sophomore Nicolas Alvarez and he lost 6-3, 6-0. It marked the second time Kilumets has faced a nationally ranked player this season.
Freshman Catalin Mateas, freshman Ryan Dickerson and sophomore Andrew DeJoy also won in straight sets for Duke.
The Blue Devils clinched the doubles points with a forfeit win at No. 3 and a 6-2 triumph at No. 2. However, Duke was in a fight in the top contest before eventually completing the doubles sweep with a tiebreaker win. Callegari partnered with freshman
Gabriel Cucalon in the narrow NCCU loss by a score of 7-6 (7-5).
NCCU concludes a five-match road swing with a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg on Thursday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
