BOX SCORECHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior
Aissa Muamba was the closest North Carolina Central University player to winning a set as the Oracle/ITA fifth-ranked University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill women's tennis team notched a 7-0 non-conference win at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Wednesday evening.
Muamba did not win a game in her first set against junior Hayley Carter, but threatened to force a third set in the final match by winning four games in the second set. Carter – a two-time ITA All-America honoree – is ranked sixth nationally in singles and remained undefeated on the season at 6-0 after eventually winning 6-0, 6-4 over Muamba.
UNC (6-0) only lost three other games in singles on its way to the shutout. Sophomore Marika Akkerman, No. 112 freshman Chloe Ouellet-Pizer and senior Ashley Dai all won by perfect 6-0, 6-0 scores from the third, fourth and sixth positions in the lineup, respectively.
Freshman
Jasmine Gabriel made her dual match debut for the Lady Eagles at No. 2 singles and was able to sneak out one game against No. 68 freshman Jessie Aney.
Junior
Lynsey Cover was the fourth NCCU player matched up against a national ranked Tar Heel and she played respectable against No. 94 sophomore Cassandra Vazquez in a 6-0, 6-2 loss.
North Carolina posted a pair of 6-0 wins in the second and third doubles matches. Muamba and Rogers were trailing 4-1 for the Lady Eagles in the top doubles flight when the Tar Heels clinched the first team point.
NCCU (0-1) will make its home debut against Western Carolina University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
