DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University battles North Carolina A&T State University on Saturday, May 9 at the Durham Athletic Park for a chance to advance to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Championships. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and admission is free.
NCCU (19-29, 12-11 MEAC) is currently a half-game ahead of Savannah State (20-31, 12-12 MEAC) and with a win over NCAT (9-36, 6-17 MEAC) will clinch the final spot to the conference playoffs. Should the Eagles lose they will finish tied with SSU at 12-12 in the Southern Division, but the Tigers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker and will get the nod to the tournament.
The Eagles are led at the plate by
Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) who leads the conference in homers with 11, and has the second highest slugging percentage at .571. He is also fourth in runs batted in with 35.
The Aggies have won just one of their last five games, last beating Florida A&M, 6-5, on May 2 in Greensboro, N.C. Brandon Wilkerson (Charlotte, N.C.) has been a major factor for the Aggies with a batting average of .351 which is sixth in the conference, and is fifth with 33 runs batted in.
NCCU is 5-0 against NCAT this season.
