DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University's baseball team returns home to the Durham Athletic Park Tuesday, April 7 against UNC Wilmington before heading to Campbell University Wednesday, April 8.
NCCU (15-16, 9-5 MEAC) is riding high coming off a weekend three-game sweep of North Carolina A&T State University, earning the season sweep in the process. Sophomore outfielder
Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) has led the Maroon and Gray as they move into the new month, entering the midweek games on a 13-game hitting streak. Through the last five games, Ortiz is batting .474 (9-19) while clubbing three homers and a pair of doubles to reach a slugging percentage of 1.053. He totaled eight RBI and nine runs scored during his spectacular week.
The first of NCCU's midweek opponents is a repeat, as UNC Wilmington comes up from the coast. UNCW (21-8, 5-1 CAA) has made a strong start in their conference this season as the Seahawks are currently second, and roll into Durham after sweeping UNC Asheville over three games, April 2-4. UNCW defeated NCCU during the early part of the season by a score of 9-3 at Brooks Field in Wilmington on March 4. Senior infielder Corey Dick (Albermarle, N.C.) continues to pace the Seahawks at the plate hitting a team-leading .355 with 19 runs driven in this season.
Campbell (24-8, 7-5 Big South) will round out the midweek schedule as they'll welcome NCCU to Buies Creek, N.C. at Jim Perry Field on Wednesday, April 8. The Camels will also be in action on Tuesday night as East Carolina visits, and Campbell brings a four-game win streak into that matchup. Junior outfielder Cole Hallum (Bakersfield, Calif.) is the power bat in the Camel lineup as he currently has nine home runs and 32 RBI, with a slugging percentage of .629 through the season.
Admission to NCCU's home game against UNCW is free at the Durham Athletic Park, and that game and the Campbell game will be aired live on the NCCU Sports Network, available at NCCUEaglePride.com.
