DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University travels west for midweek play as the Eagles visit UNC Asheville on Tuesday, April 21 and make up a postponed game at High Point on Wednesday, April 21.
NCCU (19-20, 12-8 MEAC) played a couple of extra-inning affairs with Savannah State during a three-game weekend series, walking off 7-5 in game one and falling 3-2 in the third game, dropping two of the three.
Sophomore outfielder
Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) was a driving force for the Eagles over the weekend, homering in three-straight games and twice in a day for the second time this season. Ortiz now has nine homers for the season, and is one shy of becoming the first Eagle to hit double-digit home runs in a season.
UNC Asheville (16-24, 3-12 Big South) has dropped its last seven games, which have all been on the road, stretching back to April 10 at Presbyterian. Hunter Bryant (Asheville, N.C.) is one of the top power hitters in the conference and is top-five in homers with eight, and top-10 in RBI with 30.
High Point (20-18, 9-6 Big South) is coming off a weekend sweep of Presbyterian at home, outscoring the Blue Hose 32-10 over the three-game series. Josh Greene (Ocala, Fla.) leads the Panthers at the plate with a team-best batting average of .341 which is also good for top-10 in the league. Conor Lourey (Perth, Australia) leads the High Point bullpen with an ERA of 1.83 which is second in the conference.
After the midweek games, the Eagles will travel to Boston to take on Florida A&M on April 24-25. A series win for NCCU could earn them the MEAC Southern Division title for the first time in school history.
