BOX SCORERALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team won its second straight match with a 7-2 conquest of host Shaw University at Lions Park Thursday afternoon.
The top three Eagles all won to help lead NCCU past its former league mates from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
The Eagles' fifth win in their last seven duel's leveled the squads overall record at 8-8. The Shaw Bears suffered their second straight setback to dip to 8-5.
Freshman
Kert Kilumets (6-2, 6-0) had the most dominating NCCU performance only losing two games at No. 1 singles. Senior
Daniil Gerasimov (6-1, 6-4) also prevailed in straight sets just one court over for the Eagles. Sophomore
William East had to work harder in his third tier tilt before finally finishing off his competition 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
Kilumets (8-6) moved over .500 playing in the top position in the lineup at 7-6. Gerasimov (14-1) increased his stellar win streak to 14 consecutive wins while East (11-5) has been almost as impressive going 9-1 in his last 10 matches.
Shaw's only singles point came off the racquet of Juan Sanchez.
NCCU senior
Tamina Kienka (4-6) held a sizable 6-1, 2-0 lead in his match before the Bears No. 5 player had to retire. The Eagles also picked up a forfeit win at No. 6 as Shaw only had an active roster of five netters.
East and Kienka highlighted doubles for the Maroon and Gray with an 8-3 triumph to remain undefeated paired together at 3-0. The Eagles also picked up a forfeit win at No. 3. The Bears first point came in the middle doubles match with Sanchez and Bach Tran outlasting Gerasimov and senior
Fabrice George by a score of 9-8 (7).
NCCU will host Boston College on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The two Eagles tennis teams will be playing early before BC plays an ACC duel at Duke University in the afternoon.
