Questions?
Who is eligible for tryouts? All currently enrolled young ladies at NCCU will be eligible to participate in the tryout process. In addition, any young lady that has been admitted to the University as a Freshman/Transfer by April 5, 2015 will be eligible to participate in the tryout process.
What are the requirements needed for tryouts? All currently enrolled young ladies must have an overall GPA of 2.3 at the time of tryouts. We do not round off GPA's. All young ladies must be in good standing with the University. Young ladies should have had prior Cheerleading experience and must demonstrate spirit, enthusiasm, passion for the University and a good, clear, and strong voice. Facial expressions are a must!
Is there a height/weight limit? No. However, all young ladies MUST be in great physical condition with fit, tight and toned bodies. Young ladies MUST be able to wear the current uniforms which consist of midriff tops.
Will I be allowed to wear weave and acrylic nails during the tryout process? During the tryout process, you will be allowed to wear weave and acrylic nails. After selections are made, you will have a session to discuss hair and nail options.
What will the tryout process consist of? On Day One, there will be interviews conducted by former NCCU Cheerleaders, NCCU Athletic Staff and NCCU Alumni. Each candidate must come dressed in Business Attire (suits – jacket & skirt or jacket & pants; pants, blouses, shoes, jewelry, hair and makeup). Various locations in the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium will be used for the interviews. Interviews will begin at 9:30 am. Purpose: NCCU Cheerleaders should be personable, articulate, expressive and professional in oral communications. On Day One (after lunch), Part II of the tryout process will begin at 1 pm with a Creative Cheer & Dance Combination which you will be responsible for creating. The total time for this routine is 1 minute. You will have only ONE chance to start over should you have to stop for any reason.
Judges will be former NCCU Cheerleaders, NCCU Athletics Staff and NCCU Alumni. Purpose:
An NCCU Cheerleader MUST be creative with moves and words.
On Day Two, you will be taught a very difficult cheer from one of our former dynamic and creative NCCU Cheerleaders. You will have a total of 45 minutes to learn and execute the routine. Following the instruction, you will have ample time to practice and perfect the routine. This will not be done in groups, but individually. Following lunch, we will continue the tryout process with the newly learned routine. Judges will be former NCCU Cheerleaders, NCCU Athletics Staff and NCCU Alumni. Purpose: An NCCU Cheerleader must be able to grasp new materials and execute and perfect them within a short period of time.
How will the scoring be done? Each part of the tryout process will have scores ranging from 1-10 with 1 being the lowest. The Judges will be instructed prior to the tryout process as to what they should look for. At the end of each tryout segment (interviews, creative cheer & dance and cheer routine), the sheets will be gathered and given to the Head Coach who along with impartial individuals will tally the scores. The three scores will then be added together and divided by three to get a final score. Notifications of selected young ladies will be made via email on Monday, April 20, 2015.
Will lunch be provided? Lunch will not be provided and can either be brought or currently enrolled young ladies on a meal plan can utilize the W. G. Pearson Dining Hall for their meal.
Water will be provided throughout the day.
Will I need to bring a copy of a physical? No. All young ladies will sign a waiver form releasing NCCU, NCCU Athletics, and the Cheer Coaches from any liability during the two day process. If there are medical issues that we should be made aware of prior to the tryout process, you will highlight it on the application.
What is the attire for the tryout process? Solid Maroon or Solid Gray Shorts (no capris, leggings, or compression shorts); Solid Maroon or solid Gray Sports Bra; White Cheer Shoes and White Socks. Hair and makeup should be impeccable! Only one pair of stud earrings should be worn. No hoop earrings, no eyebrow, nose, or lip jewelry allowed as well as no watches, rings, necklaces, or bracelets.
How should my music for my routine be recorded? All music MUST be on a CD. We will have one individual that will be responsible for music. Make sure that you put your name on the CD.
Will I be able to review my scores after the tryout process? Yes. They will be available beginning on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 in Room 106 in the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium
What happens if I have the overall GPA of 2.3 at the time of tryouts but fall below at the end of the semester? All grades will be reviewed at the end of the semester by an authorized individual at the University. Any young lady who falls below the cumulative GPA of 2.3 will be automatically disqualified from the program. Summer school attendance and grades are not an option. For individuals selected, Study Hall hours are mandatory!
Are the tryouts for a particular Cheerleading Squad? No. Young ladies with the higher scores will be considered for Varsity. There will be up to 14 spots on Varsity for 2015-2016. All members of the Varsity Squad will have to tryout each week for 12 spots during Football and Basketball Seasons. There will be 25 spots for JV, who this year will support Volleyball. There will be another tryout for members of the JV Squad immediately following Volleyball Season, that will cheer for Women's Basketball.
How many spots are there currently on either squad? All. All current members of Varsity, JV and Maroon & Gray will have to participate in the tryout process as all other young ladies. They will not be given any preferential treatment as to selections because they were part of the program this past year.
After being selected, what will follow? Once selections have been made, there will be a meeting with all young ladies to discuss what will take place the remainder of the semester as well as Summer Workouts. You will be given a manual which will explain all rules and regulations of NCCU Cheerleaders, along with information regarding weight room, strength and conditioning and nutrition.
All other questions can be asked at the tryout process on April 18-19.
