Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University volleyball sophomore outside hitter
Kelsey Murphy (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) finished the second day (Sept. 6) of the Deacon Invitational collecting 14 kills on 46 attempts, with only two errors (.261), earning her a spot on the All-Tournament Team, as the Eagles dropped a pair of matches to Davidson (25-19, 25-14, 25-19) and Wofford (25-17, 25-14, 25-18), 3-0.
"Kelsey is one of our go-to leaders," said head coach
Nicki Holmes. "She has quickly bought into the new process and I expect great things to come from her in her career."
During the first match against Davidson, Murphy hit an impressive .421, leading NCCU with eight kills on 19 attempts and no errors.
In the first set, the Eagles gained an early 5-2 advantage, led by junior
Kelly Rossip's (Port Charlotte, Fla.) two kills.
The Wildcats answered with a 5-2 run of their own, knotting the score at seven. After a Davidson 8-2 rally, the Wildcats saw their largest lead of the set at 16-9.
With set point threatening the Eagles as they trailed 23-15, senior
Ashley McCarthy (Elmont, N.Y.) sparked a 4-0 run for NCCU with a kill from rookie
Paige Phillips (Birmingham, Ala.). Despite the late offensive effort, back-to-back Davidson kills ended the NCCU run, giving them the 25-19 victory.
Aside from winning the opening point, the Eagles never regained an advantage in the second set, falling 25-14.
After earning an early 2-0 lead in the third set, NCCU and Davidson swapped points before the Wildcats pulled away with a four-point lead at 12-8, forcing an Eagle timeout.
Despite closing the gap to two, NCCU was unable to regain the lead, dropping the third and final set to Davidson 25-19.
During the Eagles final match of the Deacon Invitational, NCCU faced Wofford for the second time in this young season.
Just as the first meeting between the two, the Eagles could not seem to gain offensive momentum.
Wofford took the first set 25-17, cruised to a 25-14 second set victory then earned the 3-0 sweep over NCCU with a 25-18 third set win.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 9 as they host the Bulldogs from UNC Asheville at 7 p.m., inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
