NCCU Sports Network Broadcast LinkDURHAM, N.C. – Following North Carolina Central University's first-ever victory over Presbyterian College on Tuesday night, third year head coach Jim Koerner and his squad turn their focus to a golden opportunity at hand for the young program beginning on Friday afternoon, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. in Savannah, Ga.
NCCU (18-29-1, 12-10 MEAC) has the chance to win a share of its first regular season conference title since the program restarted in 2007. That team went 21-24, but was 15-5 in the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and won the regular season title in the league.
The Eagles will head down to battle Savannah State (19-29, 10-13 MEAC) in the series finale between the two squads as inclement weather during Easter weekend kept the three-game set from being complete. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Tiger Baseball Field as SSU will be the No. 4 seed from the Southern Division in next week's MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Va. Head coach Carlton Hardy's squad is 6-5 in their last 11 contests, but 6-2 in league play.
After that contest, the maroon and gray will get back on the bus and head approximately five hours down the road to Tallahassee, Fla. to finish the March 23 series finale against Florida A&M (22-24, 13-10 MEAC) that was halted in the top of the second inning because of rain. When the game restarts, sophomore Christian Triplett (Wilkesboro, N.C.) will be at-the-plate with the bases loaded and two outs with NCCU ahead of FAMU 6-0. That contest is slated to resume at 2:00 p.m. from Moore-Kittles Field.
If the Eagles win both games, the maroon and gray will be Southern Division Co-Champions and will be the second seed in the MEAC Tournament. A win against only Florida A&M will clinch the second seed, while a loss will drop NCCU to the third seed.
The NCCU Sports Network will have full coverage of the unique weekend series beginning at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, May 9 with the Denny's of Durham Pregame Show as play-by-play voice Chris Hooks will call the action from Tiger Baseball Field.
