DURHAM, N.C. – Following the adventurous three-game series against Florida A&M to wrapup conference action, North Carolina Central University hits the road for the final weekend set of the season as the Eagles will take on the Leopards of Lafayette College for the first time beginning Saturday, May 3 at 12:00 p.m. with doubleheader action as the series will end on Sunday, May 4 with the final game at 1:00 p.m. from Kamine Stadium in Easton, Pa.
NCCU (17-26-1, 12-10 MEAC) will get to do some scoreboard watching this weekend as the Eagles have finished up league play and have to await their fate as to what their seed will be in the upcoming MEAC Baseball Tournament in Norfolk, Va. If the tournament started today, the maroon and gray would be the three seed out of the Southern Division, but Florida A&M (11-9 MEAC) hosts North Carolina A&T (8-13 MEAC), while first place Bethune-Cookman (12-9 MEAC) is on the road at Savannah State (9-11).
More than likely, the Eagles will have to finish both of the final games in the Florida A&M and Savannah State series to determine seeding for the Tournament, stay tuned for updates as the weekend develops.
The maroon and gray will battle Lafayette (12-26 overall, 5-13 Patriot League) who currently sits in fifth place in the Patriot League. NCCU has faced two previous teams from that league (Navy and Holy Cross). The Leopards are led by freshman Alex Woinski who leads the squad batting .300 with a home run and 16 RBI.
NCCU is still led by senior Tyson Simpson (Burgaw, N.C.) whose three-run jack to right field sealed the deal in game one of the FAMU series as the third baseman is batting .367 at-the-dish while his fellow senior Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) tops the squad with 36 RBI on the year. As a team in the last series against the Rattlers the Eagles hit seven home runs, a modern era record for a series.
First pitch for game one has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. due to Patriot League Network television policy as the final game of the Saturday twinbill will commence 30 minutes after that contest has concluded.
The series finale will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. Due to the MEAC Track and Field Championships, the NCCU Sports Network will not be broadcasting this series, but fans can follow the action through the Patriot League's live stream package and on the live stats.
