DURHAM, N.C. – For the third consecutive season, North Carolina Central University has made it through the rigors of the South Division and qualified for postseason play as the third-seeded Eagles will battle the North Division's second seed, Norfolk State Spartans, in opening round action of the 2014 MEAC Baseball Tournament at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va. at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14.

NCCU (18-31-1, 12-12 MEAC) has compiled a 3-4 record in their two previous appearances in the conference tournament that includes a semifinal run last season all the way from the loser's bracket after dropping the opening game to these same Spartans 5-4 on May 15.  The maroon and gray trounced the No. 4 seed from the North, Maryland Eastern Shore, 10-4 the next day and got revenge on NSU in a 12-6 victory before getting eliminated by the South's second seed, Bethune-Cookman, 7-3 on Friday, May 17.

The Eagles enter the tournament on a disappointing note after dropping both makeup games over-the-weekend, but the league is wide-open for any of the eight teams, especially as competitive as the South Division turned out to be with three games separating the first and the fourth seed.

Norfolk State (19-24, 14-10 MEAC) earned the No. 2 seed from the North Division and has done so every year since NCCU has joined the league.  This will be meeting No. 15 between these two dating back to the March 9, 2008.  The maroon and gray are 3-11 against the Spartans, but have won two-of-the-last three meetings.

The Spartans are led by senior outfielder Cameron Day who tops the squad batting .333 on the year, while redshirt senior first baseman Ross Cardwell has a team-high 24 RBI.

Leading the charge for the maroon and gray, senior Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) tops the team batting .363 on the year with an NCCU-best 11 doubles on the year.  Williamson is the first Eagle in the modern era to record 40 or more RBI in two seasons during his career.  Senior third baseman Tyson Simpson (Burgaw, N.C.) is second on the team batting .353 with 10 doubles on the year, while senior Zack Lee (Wilson, N.C.) is No. 1 in the MEAC with 46 runs scored.

The NCCU Sports Network will have full coverage of the 2014 MEAC Baseball Tournament beginning on Wednesday, May 9 at 9:00 a.m. with the Denny's of Durham Pregame Show taking the air at 8:45 a.m. as play-by-play voice Chris Hooks will call all the action from Marty Miller Field.
