MONTGOMERY, Ala. – North Carolina Central University dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Alabama State as the Hornets took game one on a walk-off double in the ninth to win 3-2, while the Eagles committed five errors to drop game two 14-1 on Saturday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex in Montgomery, Ala.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth in the first game of the day, sophomore James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.) reached on an infield error by Alabama State, followed up by a Christian Triplett (Wilkesboro, N.C.) single to left field to get the Eagle offense rolling. From that point on, both pitchers NCCU's Terry McNabb (Davidson, Sask.) and T.J. Renda for ASU put the clamps down until the Hornets struck the final blow in the bottom of the ninth.
Alabama State's Chase Waters drilled a two-out double to right field to score Branden Castro to plate the game's winning run and take the first contest 3-2.
Despite the loss, McNabb (2-3) threw 8.2 innings allowing three runs on nine hits with five K's, while Renda for Alabama State threw a complete game four hitter with six strikeouts.
Game two was all ASU as they opened up a 1-0 contest with seven runs in the third inning, aided by four NCCU errors as the Hornets finished off the doubleheader sweep with the 14-1 win. The Eagles ended the second game with five errors.
Leading the Eagle offense on Saturday was Triplett who finished a combined 4-for-7 with a double for the maroon and gray.
