DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University is making a habit of winning games late in the 2014 campaign as the Eagles used two walk-off home runs to clinch the three-game series against the defending MEAC Champion Tigers of Savannah State over the weekend.
In game one, trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and two men on base, redshirt junior Eric Kimber (Greensboro, N.C.) plated the second run for NCCU on an RBI single to make it 4-2. That's when senior Tyson Simpson (Burgaw, N.C.) crushed a walk-off bomb to right field, sending the maroon and gray fleeing out of the dugout as the Eagles took the first contest 5-4.
After dropping game two 5-4 to the visiting Tigers of SSU, game three showed another Eagle had a flair for the dramatic.
Savannah State took a 8-7 lead on a passed ball in the top of the ninth inning. Freshman Bryant Battle (Greenville, N.C.) led off the frame with a single through the right side. After Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) flew out to centerfield, and that's when sophomore Christian Triplett sealed the deal for the cardiac Eagles.
Triplett absolutely drilled a bomb to left field to plate the final two runs of the series as the maroon and gray took down Savannah State 9-8. That was Triplett's second home run of the series.
NCCU (7-12-1, 5-4 MEAC) has placed themselves into the thick of the Southern Division of the MEAC.
On-the-hill, sophomore Andrew Vernon (Raleigh, N.C.) threw a combined seven innings on the weekend, picking up a win, while striking out five batters and allowing only one run on one hit.
At-the-plate, senior Zack Lee (Wilson, N.C.) batted .400 in the three-game series, while Simpson and Triplett combined for three home runs and nine RBI.
