HIGH POINT, N.C. – North Carolina Central University committed five errors resulting in eight unearned runs for High Point University as the host Panthers cruised to a 16-3 baseball victory on Tuesday at Williard Stadium in High Point, N.C.
The Eagles' fielding and throwing woes started early, as three errors allowed five unearned runs in High Point's seven-run first inning.
After the rough start, NCCU managed to keep it close, trailing 9-3 after plating two runs in the top of the sixth. High Point pulled away by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, another run in the seventh and four more in the eighth.
Offensively, shortstop Zack Lee and third baseman Tyson Simpson continued to top NCCU with two hits each. Simpson tallied an RBI and his fifth double of the season. Rookie centerfielder Carlos Ortiz added a hit, an RBI and a run scored for the Eagles.
NCCU (1-5-1) returns to action this weekend (March 1-2) with a three-game series against rival North Carolina A&T at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m., with the same first pitch time for the single game on Sunday.
