CLINTON, S.C. – Due to darkness, North Carolina Central University and Presbyterian College could not settled their 11th matchup since 2010, as the game ended in an 8-8 tie at the end of the 13 innings on Wednesday afternoon and the PC Baseball Complex in Clinton, S.C.
This marks the first tie in NCCU's modern baseball history.
For the second straight game, the maroon and gray jumped out to a 3-0 lead after loading the bases on the Blue Hose in the top of the first inning. In that frame, freshman Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) singled to get the Eagle offense going.
In the bottom of the third, Presbyterian added two unearned runs to the scoreboard aided by an Eagle error as Brandon Martin's two-RBI single made it 3-2.
The Blue Hose knotted it up at 3-3 on Cam McRae's home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth. PC ended up leaving the bases stranded after tying the game.
NCCU threatened to take the lead back in the fifth, but grounded into a double play.
In the top of the 11th innings, the Eagle offense came to life to the tune of five runs on six hits to take an 8-3 lead. Freshman Jared Kahegias (Sanford, N.C.) and senior Zack Lee (Wilson, N.C.) each doubled along with freshman Jake Cagle (Fairview, N.C.) and Tyson Simpson (Burgaw, N.C.), and sophomore Kory Wood (Spring Lake, N.C.) who all singled in the frame.
Presbyterian rallied to tie the game at 8-8 in the bottom-half of the frame by racking up five runs on five hits that included a Martin RBI-double down the right field line.
In the 12th and 13th frame, neither team could muster up a run which forced game officials to call the game due to darkness at 5:56 p.m.
Both Simpson anLee recorded three hits apiece, while Ortiz and Wood finished with two in the contest.
NCCU (0-1-1) will look for their first win of the year on Friday, Feb. 21 at 4:00 p.m. as the Eagles will host the Purple Eagles of Niagara University in a four-game series at the Durham Athletic Park.
