DURHAM, N.C. – Due in part to the recent snowstorm in the Triangle, North Carolina Central University's baseball program will hit the diamond to begin 2014 on Sunday, Feb. 16 instead of Saturday, Feb. 15 as the Eagles host the Highlanders of NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) in a two-game set on Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park.
With the storm that took place across the state of North Carolina on Wednesday and part of Thursday, game officials were forced to cancel Saturday's doubleheader.
Last season's scheduled back-to-back twinbill was only able to get two games in because of the weather with the Eagles taking both matchups (11-4, 5-1) at the DAP on Feb. 17, 2013.
The Eagles and the Highlanders have met five times over the past two years with the maroon and gray owning a 3-2 lead in the series.
NCCU won 27 games in 2013 to set a modern era record that also included 19 victories at the DAP to secure the program's first winning home record in a single season.
Third year head coach Jim Koerner will send senior righty Terry McNabb (Davidson, Sask.) to the hill in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. McNabb (5-6, 4.43 ERA) tied with the most wins on the staff last year and finished with 50 strikeouts and only 18 walks in 81.1 innings of work.
NJIT finished 2013 with a 20-34 record and will send senior right handed hurler D.J. Roche to the mound in game one. Roche did not pitch last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but had a 2.42 ERA prior to his injury in 2012.
Game two will see sophomore Andrew Vernon (Raleigh, N.C.) make his first start at NCCU. Vernon (1-2, 3.54 ERA) made 15 appearances in his rookie campaign throwing 20.1 innings and allowed eight earned runs. A late season injury cut his season short, but he's expected to make an impact toeing the rubber for the maroon and gray.
Highlanders' head coach Brian Guiliana will send lefty Ian Bentley (3-2, 6.05 ERA) to the mound in game two Saturday. The sophomore threw 41.2 innings last season striking out 28 batters as a freshman.
The NCCU Sports Network will have full coverage Sunday's twinbill as announcer Mike Wood will call the action beginning on Sunday at 12:55 with the Denny's of Durham Pregame Show.
