Box Score (HTML)DURHAM, N.C. – A 36-to-12 run midway through the first half was all North Carolina Central University needed en route to setting a school record for points in a game as the Eagles took down the College of Faith 123-65 on Tuesday night in McDougald-McLendon Gym.
The 123 points broke the previous record of 119 scored on March 12, 1949 when NCCU beat Winston-Salem State 119-65.
Through the first eight minutes, the visiting Saints hung tight with the maroon and gray who came out a bit shaky as two Dominique Tramaine free throws gave the College of Faith a 12-11 lead with a little over 12 minutes remaining.
On the next possession, junior
Dante Holmes (Baltimore, Maryland) drilled a three-point that put the Eagles up for good 14-12 with 12:09 to go.
Over the final 12 minutes of the first frame, head coach
LeVelle Moton's squad turned up the intensity and outscored the Saints 36-12 to take a 50-24 lead into the locker room.
NCCU shot 54.1 percent from-the-field in the first frame including a deadly 6-for-10 from deep as senior transfer
Anthony McDonald (Aberdeen, Mississippi) drilled 4-of-5 shots from beyond-the-arc to lead the charge with 16 points.
Despite the comfortable lead, the maroon and gray turned the ball over 10 times and allowed College of Faith to shoot 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the foul line.
The second half was more of the same as NCCU missed nine shots in the second half on the way to a 73-point stanza on the way to the record breaking win.
Senior
Jordan Parks (Queens, New York) ended the game with a career-best 30 points on 13-for-17 shooting that included a crowd-pleasing windmill dunk that was preceded by sophomore Kevin Crawford's (Blythewood, South Carolina) unbelievable one-handed steal and save to start the play.
Crawford had by-far his best night in an NCCU uniform recording his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 helpers to go along with his Eagle best 3 steals.
All total, the maroon and gray finished with six players in double figures as McDonald (22 points),
Jamal Ferguson (Norfolk, Virginia) added 18 points,
Jeremiah Ingram (Detroit, Michigan) contributed 15 points, while Holmes dropped-in 13 points in the win.
College of Faith (1-4) was led by Justin Sellers who led the Saints with 22 points on 6-of-12 shooting from-the-field.
The win gives Moton win No. 90 at NCCU on the same date as his first victory which came on Nov. 18, 2009 as the Eagles beat North Carolina Wesleyan 85-70.
NCCU (1-1) won the rebound battle 48-22 and forced 29 Saint turnovers in the victory as they move on to the first matchup in the 2014 Emerald Coast Classic as the Eagles take on the Creighton Bluejays for the second time in program history.
That contest is slated for 4:00 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, Nov. 23 inside the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska and will be televised live on Fox Sports 1.
