NORFOLK, VA. – North Carolina Central University’s 10-4 victory over UMES and Norfolk State’s 21-11 loss to the South’s No. 1 seed Savannah State University has setup a rematch for Friday morning, May 17 at 10:00 in the loser’s bracket of the 2013 MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Baseball Championships at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
NCCU (26-28) dropped a 5-4 decision to the Spartans on Wednesday morning, but the maroon and gray missed a number of golden opportunities in the opening round loss leaving six runners on base, while also not taking advantage of bunt situations.
NSU (19-28) fell to the loser’s bracket by virtue of the 21-11 loss as the game was called by the MEAC’s 10-run rule. In that contest, the Spartans combined with Savannah State for 32 runs, 39 hits, and seven errors. Centerfielder Andre Moore went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI while his teammate first baseman Zach Markel ended up 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI in the loss. The green and gold went through six pitchers and gave up 17 earned runs in defeat.
Second year head coach Jim Koerner will send Jordan Quinn (Goldsboro, N.C.) to the hill for start No. 12 on the year. In 71.1 innings of work in his junior campaign, Quinn (5-3, 3.28 ERA) has struck out 36 batters and walked only 22 and earned the win against Norfolk State back on March 7 with 7.0 innings of work allowing only three hits and one earned run with two strikeouts to move to 3-0 on the year.
The winner of Friday’s first contest moves on to battle the loser of the 2:00 p.m. matchup on Friday night in a second elimination game with the victor moving on to Saturday’s semifinals.
