RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s tennis team’s 2013 campaign came to a close during the semi-final match-up of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship between the Lady Eagles and the Morgan State Lady Bears as they fell 4-2 on Saturday, April 20 in Raleigh, N.C., at the Millbrook Tennis Center.
The Lady Bears started the match winning the doubles point over NCCU after Arina Aliueva and Jasmine Edwards swept
Brianna Gatson and
Mia Ramic 8-0 at the No. 3, then Ekaterina Iakovleva and Margarita Belyakova beat Lady Eagles
Olesya Palko and
Aissa Muamba 8-1 in the No. 2 spot.
After MSU took the 2-0 lead, winning the doubles point,
Ekaterina Nekrasova and
Rebecca Wood No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished at 4-4.
In singles action the Lady Bears pushed their lead to 2-0 after Edwards defeated Gatson at No. 6 (6-1, 6-1).
MEAC Rookie of the Year, Muamba, closed the gap to one point after sealing the No. 3 victory over Chelsi Russell (6-3, 6-1).
The Lady Eagles and MSU split the next two matches after Mia Ramic fell as No. 5 to Aliueva 6-4, 7-6 and Nekrasova defeated Mi’Kola Cooper 7-6, 6-0.
With NCCU down 3-2, the Lady Bears sealed their spot in the MEAC Championship match after Iakovleva was victories over the Lady Eagles lone senior Palko at the No. 1 (6-4, 6-2).
Woods' singles match was chalked up as unfinished as she led MSU’s Belyakova 6-4, 4-3.
NCCU concludes the 2013 season with a school record of wins at 13-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
NCCU's Nekrasova was recognized on the MEAC All-Tournament Team at No. 2 singles.
