Box Score:  NCCU at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Trailing 5-0 through the first two innings, North Carolina Central University was never able to get the offense going dropping a7-0 decision to the host Panthers of High Point University at Willard Stadium on Wednesday night.

A Zack Lee (Wilson, N.C.) double to center field was not enough to get the maroon and gray offense in gear in the first frame as Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) and Ronald Thompson (Chadbourn, N.C.) were not able to drive him in.

The Panthers pounced in the bottom of the first inning when Willie Medina led the frame off with a triple to left field scoring on a sacrifice fly by Sean Wilson to take a 1-0 lead.  Spencer Angelis recorded a second triple in the frame, which was followed up by back-to-back home runs including a two-run bomb by starter on the mound Ryan Retz and a solo shot by Adam Barry to take a 4-0 lead after one complete.

High Point plated another run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead, and kept the Eagle offense at-bat for the entire night.

Throughout the entire ballgame, the maroon and gray were only able to get a runner in scoring position five times, yet could not get a run on the board.

HPU scored a run in the fifth and in the sixth to put the score at 7-0 and hung on from there to take the first meeting between these two programs by that final tally.

NCCU (23-18, 10-8 MEAC) was held to five hits with Lee going 2-for-3 at-the-dish to lead the Eagles.

Junior Jordan Quinn (Goldsboro, N.C.) dropped his second straight decision going 5.0 innings allowing eight hits with five earned runs allowed with a walk and three strikeouts.

High Point (19-20) starter Ryan Retz (4-2) threw a complete game shutout with five strikeouts to earn the win, while going 2-for-4 at-the-plate with a two-run home run, a double, three RBI, and a run scored.

The Eagles return home for yet another crucial three-game series against the Tigers of Savannah State University that begins on Saturday, April 19 with doubleheader action at 1:00 p.m. from the Durham Athletic Park.
