NCCU PREPS FOR BIG SERIES WITH BETHUNE-COOKMAN

Eagles enter weekend with four consecutive wins

DURHAM, N.C. – Entering the weekend winners of four-in-a-row, North Carolina Central University will host the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University in a three-game MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) series beginning with doubleheader action on Saturday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m., ending with the weekend finale on Sunday, March 11 also at 1:00.  All games will be played at the Durham Athletic Park.

NCCU (8-5, 2-1 MEAC) is coming off a big win in non-conference action over Norfolk State.  In the win, the maroon and gray pounded out 12 hits, while holding the Spartans to three in the 6-1 victory.

Junior Dylan Drayton led the Eagles going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases.

B-CU (7-7, 3-0 MEAC) enters the weekend fresh off an 11-1 loss on Wednesday evening to Central Michigan after taking the first game in the series the day before 10-5.  The Wildcats are led by Josh Johnson at the plate as the junior is batting .400 (16-for-40), but junior Matt Noble tops the squad with 11 RBI, along with five doubles and a triple.

Head coach Jim Koerner will send senior lefty Michael Romano (Spotsylvania, Va.) to the hill.  Romano sports a 5.57 ERA with an 0-2 mark as he has thrown 21 innings this season.  He will be opposed by lefty Ali Simpson who is 0-1 on the year in three starts with a 9.00 ERA.  Simpson has thrown 16 innings with 12 K’s and 13 walks.

Game two on Saturday, which is slated for seven innings per MEAC rule will see right handed senior Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) against B-CU lefty Anthony Stokes.  Stokes (0-1, 1.80 ERA) has thrown 10 innings giving up only six hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts.  Frye (1-0, 4.19 ERA) on the other hand, has thrown 19.1 innings and has mowed down 17 batters this year to give him 168 in his career.

The final game of the series is a matchup between the league’s Co-Pitchers of the Week, as junior righty Terry McNabb (Davidson, Sask.) will throw against Montana Durapau.  McNabb (2-1, 2.88 ERA) will make his third start of the year, while Durapau (2-0, 1.48 ERA) is making his fifth start of the season and has thrown 30.1 innings with 19 K’s and only nine walks.  McNabb is not too far behind with 15 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.

Last season, the Eagles split the series as home as the final game was called due to inclement weather, but the Wildcats won all three matchups down in Daytona Beach, Fla. last March.

The NCCU Sports Network will have wall-to-wall coverage of the weekend series, tune in beginning at 12:45 p.m. as the Champps Pregame Show will countdown to first pitch.  Play-by-play voice Chris Hooks will call the action live from the DAP.
