DURHAM, N.C. – In his first college at-bat, North Carolina Central University freshman catcher James Dey delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Eagles an 8-7 victory over rival North Carolina A&T in the nightcap of a MEAC doubleheader on Saturday at the Durham Athletic Park.
NCCU redshirt senior Akeem Hood reached safely with one out in the 13th inning courtesy of a throwing error by NC A&T relief pitcher Bradley Jeffries. Hood raced all the way to third base when Jeffries’ throw sailed down the right field line.
Dey (Charlotte, N.C./Olympic H.S.), who entered the contest in the top of the 13th in a defensive substitution, then watched Jeffries intentionally walk Ryan Collins and Luis Diaz to load the bases for the rookie. The leftie hit a fly ball to center field for the second out, but the throw to the plate was not in time to get the speedy Hood tagging from third, as the Eagles stormed the field and swarmed Dey.
Although the Eagles pounded out 15 hits in the game-two win, NC A&T committed eight errors in the loss as all eight NCCU runs, including the game-tying run in the bottom of the 12th, were unearned.
NCCU senior pitcher Gavin Guarrera entered the contest in the seventh inning and allowed just one run in six-and-two-thirds innings to earn the win.
In game one, NC A&T junior second baseman Luke Tendler doubled in the fifth inning, belted a three-run home run in the sixth inning, and smashed a three-run double in the eighth frame to spark the Aggies to an 8-3 victory.
A&T senior pitcher Brent Moore allowed just five hits and one earned run in the complete game victory.
NCCU and NC A&T close out the weekend series with a single game on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park. To listen to the live action on the NCCU Sports Network, visit
