DURHAM, N.C. – Junior lefty Jordan Quinn (Goldsboro, N.C.) continued his dominant ways on the hill surrendering only one earned run in eight innings of work as North Carolina Central University earned its third straight win cruising to the 11-1 victory over Coppin State University in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at the Durham Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.

NCCU plated the night’s first runs in the bottom of the first after junior Dylan Drayton (Raleigh, N.C.) led off with a walk, which was followed up by a Zach Lee (Wilson, N.C.) single.  Senior Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) reached on the second walk of the frame to load the bases and that’s when junior Troy Marrow (Lutherville, Md.) drove in Drayton on a sacrifice fly, and Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) plated the second run on a sacrifice bunt as the Eagles led 2-0.  The final run of the frame came on a Tyson Simpson (Burgaw, N.C.) single down the left field line scoring Diaz as the maroon and gray sprinted out to the 3-0 lead.

Quinn breezed through the first four innings allowing only two hits, recorded four strikeouts, picked off a runner, and the Eagle defense turned a double play to keep the visiting Eagles off the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the second, the maroon and gray added two more to the scoreboard after a leadoff walk by redshirt senior Akeem Hood (Raleigh, N.C.).   After Hood easily stole second, Drayton ripped a single to right field scoring Hood and putting the Eagles up 4-0.  Drayton came around to score on a wild pitch to put NCCU up 5-0 after two complete.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Zach Lee’s first double at NCCU allowed the maroon and gray to score two batters later when Marrow’s infield hit allowed Lee to put the host Eagles up 6-0.

The maroon and gray defense made the highlight reel in the top of the fifth when Marrow turned a double play of his own after making a great diving stab to rob CSU’s Daniel McCrea of a base hit in which Marrow tossed the ball to first as Chris Godfrey was way off the base, keeping Coppin State scoreless.

That momentum carried over to the bottom of the fifth frame when freshman Christian Triplett hit a towering shot to wall in left centerfield to score Tyler Murphy (Islip, N.Y.) and Simpson to give NCCU an 8-0 cushion.

Coppin State’s lone run of the night came in the top of the seventh inning when Zach Hawk’s RBI single to right field drove in Godfrey.  That was the only run the visiting Eagles plated in meeting No. 12 between these two teams.

With the score 9-1 off of Marrow’s third RBI of the night, NCCU recorded the final two runs of the game on sophomore Cory Williamson’s first career double to the wall in right centerfield which put the score at its final resting place at 11-1.

Freshman righty Christian Neal (Wendell, N.C.) came on in-relief in the ninth and struck out the side to end the game and give NCCU its third straight win.

Quinn (4-0) went eight innings, allowed one earned run, six hits, and a season-high six strikeouts in his fourth straight win.

Offensively, Marrow ended the night 2-for-3 with three RBI to tie him with Williamson at the top of the roster with 13 RBI apiece.  Both Simpson and Lee were the other two Eagles to record two hits in the win.

CSU (5-13 overall, 2-1 MEAC) was led by Godfrey who went 2-for-4 at-the-plate and Hawk who was 2-for-3 with a double, and an RBI in the loss.

NCCU (12-9, 5-4 MEAC) will look to make it four-in-a-row on Wednesday, March 20 in 3:00 afternoon tilt against Coppin State from the Durham Athletic Park.
