NCCU lost six prior meetings with the Lancers dating back to the first match-up on Feb. 23, 2008, which was a 7-0 sweep by Longwood. Last season’s affair was a slim 4-3 win by the Lancers, but the Lady Eagles turned the table on Sunday.
NCCU opened the match by taking the doubles point with an 8-3 win by Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood at No. 1 doubles and an 8-2 win by Aissa Muamba and Olesya Palko at No. 2 doubles.
The Lady Eagles then dominated the first three singles matches on the court to clinch their first win over the Lancers and their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-4.
Muamba cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Longwood’s Allison Shulman at No. 3 singles for her 13th straight singles win.
Wood dispatched Sarah Moomau 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, followed by a grueling 6-3, 6-2 victory by Palko at No. 1 singles over Marta Pinyol.
NCCU’s Mia Ramic outlasted Hannah Hill in a second set tiebreaker 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 5 singles, while Nekrasova battled Malin Allgurin in a three-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6), to close out the match.
