HOYLE SCORES SEASON-HIGH AS NCCU FALLS TO FAMU, 63-50

Rookie Trio lead Lady Eagles during Conference Loss

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – During the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball teams second match up with the Lady Rattlers from Florida A&M the Lady Eagles came up short once again, falling to FAMU 63-50 Saturday Feb. 9, at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on the campus of NCCU.

A trio of freshmen led the Lady Eagles during on the offensive end and on the boards during the conference battle. Hickory, N.C., native Aja Hoyle led NCCU with her new season-best 16 points, along with contributing four rebounds, three steals and one assist and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Fellow rookie Tisha Dixon tallied 13 points while collecting seven boards and red shirt freshmen Kaylah Blount continued her rebounding success leading the game with 10 rebounds in addition to six points and one steal.

Almost three minutes into the first half of the game the Lady Eagles and Rattlers both struggled to find their first baskets. FAMU struck first after a made free throw from Jamie Foreman at the 17:43 mark.

NCCU faced it largest deficit of the half as they fell by 15 with 8:43 left to play. Battling back the Lady Eagles brought the game within six after a made lay up from Blount as time expired, trailing FAMU 36-30 after the first twenty minutes.   

During the second half of action NCCU battled to keep the game within striking distance falling by as many as 18. A made shot from behind the arch from Montreshia Perry with 5:29 left in the game brought the score within 11 points before the Lady Eagles fell by 13 with a final score of 63-50.

As a team, NCCU shot 41 percent from the field, 14-for-20 from the free throw line, led the game with 35 rebounds, collected 10 assist as a team and shot 50 percent from behind the arch.

Three Lady Rattlers finished with double-digits performances during the contest. Jasmine Grice led all scorers with 22 points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals. Patrice Collie and Kimberly Sparkman also contributed to the FAMU offensive success with 14 and 11 respectively.

As a team, FAMU shot 46 precent from the field, 3-for6 from the charity stripe, totaled 25 rebounds, dished out 15 assists, collected 14 steals, blocked three NCCU shots and shot 6-for-17 from three point range.

The Lady Eagles return to action Monday Feb. 11, as they continue conference competition facing the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman.  Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
