DURHAM, N.C. – After beginning the season 3-0, North Carolina Central University finds itself 3-3 after dropping a closely contested doubleheader to Presbyterian College on Sunday afternoon at the Durham Athletic Park as the Eagles were shutout in game one 5-0, and fell in extra innings 5-3 in twinbill finale as the Blue Hose earned the sweep of the weekend series.
Game one turned on NCCU in the top of the second inning when two Eagle errors allowed PC to get on the board leading 1-0, while back-to-back hits, a Nate Chong double and Brandon Martin’s single advancing on the throw put runners on second and third with one out followed up by a Brad Zebedis sacrifice fly put the Blue Hose up 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Eagles threatened with runners at first and second with one out following a Tyson Simpson (Burgaw, N.C.) single and Ronald Thompson (Chadbourn, N.C.) walk. The Blue Hose defense turned one its five double plays on the day to thwart the Eagle rally.
PC made it 4-0 in the fifth inning on a Zebedis’s two-RBI single.
The final threat by the maroon and gray came in the bottom of the sixth when NCCU loaded the bases with one out, but Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) and Simpson both flew out to end the threat, keeping the Eagles off the board.
The fifth and final run for PC came in the seventh inning as the Blue Hose took game one 5-0.
Junior Terry McNabb (Davidson, Sask.) pitched admirably through seven innings of work with five strikeouts surrendering four earned runs in taking the loss.
PC’s Chandler Knox went eight strong innings allowing only five hits with three strike outs and no runs allowed in the win.
Game two started out with the Blue Hose offense on the attack again as they put up two runs on three hits to begin the final contest of the afternoon slated for seven innings.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, NCCU mounted a threat with both Akeem Hood (Raleigh, N.C.) and Dylan Drayton (Raleigh, N.C.) reaching base, but the Eagles were stopped in their tracks unable to plate a run.
In the top of the fourth, an Aaron Preston leadoff double ended up plating the third PC run of the game, but it was in the bottom of the fifth the maroon and gray got the offense going.
Thompson’s leadoff walk followed up by Zach Lee’s (Wilson, N.C.) single and Ryan Collins reaching base after he was hit-by-a-pitch loaded the bases for the NCCU. Hood’s RBI single plated the first run for the Eagles on the day and cut the deficit to two at 3-1.
After Drayton reached on a fielder’s choice, Diaz hit into a 3-4 double play as Presbyterian kept the damage at a minimum.
The maroon and gray made another move in the sixth after Marrow and Williamson both singled. Simpson’s bunt was booted by PC catcher Robby Swab which allowed Marrow to come across home plate to make it 3-2. Lee’s RBI single knotted up the score at 3-3. The next two batters failed to reach to end the threat.
Three frames later, PC put the Eagles away with two runs in the top of the 10th with back-to-back RBI singles by Ryan Hagan and Billy Motroni to put the Blue Hose up 5-3.
NCCU went down in order in the bottom-half of the 10th as Presbyterian earned the series sweep with a 5-3 victory in game two.
Hood, Marrow, and Lee all recorded two hits in the loss for the Eagles, as senior Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) threw 6.1 innings and struck out three batters, while PC’s Bud Jeter went seven innings with six strikeouts for the Blue Hose.
