NCCU WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS 6-1 TO APPALACHIAN STATE

Aissa Muamba Earns Lady Eagles Lone Singles Victory


BOONE, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to the Mountaineers of Appalachian State University on Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club in Boone, N.C.

Lady Eagle freshman Aissa Muamba was the lone Lady Eagle to walk away with a singles victory as she defeated Appalachian State’s Brianna Armellino, 6-4, 6-2, 10-7 as the No. 4 singles player.

The Mountaineers swept through doubles action to capture the first point and move ahead of the Lady Eagles 1-0.

Appalachian State duo Ellie Linsell and Mackenzie LaSure defeated NCCU's Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood (8-2) in No. 1 doubles, while Jennifer Ansari and Clare Cox finished off Mia Ramic and Muamba in the No. 2 spot (8-6). In No. 3 doubles, Gabriela Celi and Brianna Armellino moved past Olesya Palko and Brianna Gatson (8-3) to earn Appalachian's first point heading into singles competition.

The Mountaineers continued the swing in singles action, with Linsell defeating Palko in No. 1 spot (6-2, 6-3), followed by Cox's win at No. 2 over Nekrasova (6-2, 6-2) and Appalachian States Ansari rounded out the top three with a victory over Wood at the No. 3 spot (6-1, 6-2). Muamba’s victory came in the No. 4 spot for the Lady Eagles while Jessica Thaggard handled Ramic at No. 5 (6-1, 6-0) and Carson Shell won the No. 6 position for the Mountaineers in a shutout against Julia Aguilar (6-0, 6-0).

The Lady Eagles return to courts with a Tuesday, Feb. 19 matchup against Shaw University at 2 p.m., at home on the NCCU Tennis Courts.
