DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Despite a strong first half effort and first career double-double from North Carolina Central University freshman
Tisha Dixon, the Lady Eagles fell short against the Eagles from Coppin State, 53-38, on Saturday Jan. 26, at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium in Durham, N.C.
Dixon, the Kinston, N.C., native, led all scorers with 10 points along with a game-high of 17 rebounds. The Rookie also contributed three blocked shots, one assist and shot 6-for-7 from the free throw line.
The Lady Eagles started the first half on a basket from Dixon and a foul, after the made free throw NCCU led 3-0. CSU scored five straight off a jumper and 3-point basket before
Kaylah Blount tied the game at five with a layup. The visiting Eagles continued on a 7-0 run before two free throws from Dixon brought the game within one with 11:58 left in the first half.
CSU took its largest lead of the half after a 12-4 run, putting them ahead nine with 1:02 left on the first half clock. Red shirt senior Chasidy Williams took the Lady Eagles into the locker room with a seven point deficit, after a made layup with 34 seconds left in the first twenty.
Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Eagles struggled to find their first basket. NCCU remained scoreless, allowing 13 straight CSU points, until a jumper by Tenika Neely with 13:17 left in the game.
In addition to Dixon,
Montreshia Perry scored eight points, Blount added six while shooting 3-for-3 from the field,
Aja Hoyle pulled down five boards and
Amber Neely had two steals.
As a team, the Lady Eagles shot 32 percent from the field on 14-for-43 shooting, pulled down a game-high of 39 boards, shot 77 percent from the charity stripe (7-for-9), blocked three shots, and dished out eight assists.
CSU was led Kyra Coleman who scored 10 points, pulled down five boards and had two steals in the visiting Eagles victory.
CSU shot 35 percent from the field, 69 percent from the free throw line, grasped 30 rebounds and shot 9-for13 from the free throw line.
The Lady Eagles return to action Monday Jan. 28, as they take on Morgan State University in Durham, N.C., tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
