DURHAM, N.C. – Four North Carolina Central University student-athletes scored in double figures propelled by Emanuel Chapman’s 13 assists as the host Eagles tied the longest winning streak since the 1999-2000 season in the 84-75 victory over Coppin State University on Saturday evening in McDougald-McLendon Gym.
NCCU came out clicking on all cylinders when a Ray Willis (Atlanta. Ga.) three-pointer from the corner helped the Eagles jump out to a quick 8-2 lead just four minutes into the ballgame, forcing Coppin State’s head coach Ron “Fang” Mitchell to take a quick timeout.
The visiting Eagles answered, cutting the maroon and gray advantage to one at 15-14 with 10:23 left to go in the first frame.
With nine minutes left in the frame, NCCU stretched the lead to 10 at 24-14, when CSU went on a 15-to-4 spurt to take its first lead of the day at 29-28. The maroon and gray responded with a 7-0 run, sparked by a Stanton Kidd (Baltimore, Md.) three pointer to take a 35-29 lead into the locker room.
The final half saw the host Eagles score the first seven points highlighted by a Kidd alley-oop from Jeremy Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.) sending the crowd into a frenzy extending the lead to 44-32 with 16:08 left in the second stanza.
The visiting Eagles trimmed the NCCU lead to 58-54 with 9:28 left led by a couple of Andre Armstrong three pointers.
That’s when head coach LeVelle Moton’s squad put up its best work as the maroon and gray widened the margin back out to 10 at 67-57 following an Ingram three-pointer with 6:55 left.
CSU never got within six points and NCCU’s Kidd put the finishing touch for the host Eagles with a crowd-pleasing putback dunk that pushed the lead to 75-66 with 1:02 left.
Willis led the Eagles with 20 points shooting 7-of-13 from the field while grabbing six rebounds as Ingram contributed with 19 points and a career-high six steals. Jay Copeland (Suffolk, Va.) chipped-in with 17 points along with five rebounds as Kidd recorded 15 points and nine boards.
Chapman’s 13 helpers are the fourth-most in school history and the eighth time that the junior has registered double-figure assists.
Coppin State (6-16, 2-4 MEAC) was by Armstrong’s game-high 28 points as the senior drilled 6-of-10 three-pointers, while Patrick Cole scored 17 points on 5-for-13 shooting.
NCCU (12-7 overall, 5-0 MEAC) will look make it seven straight as they take on the Bears of Morgan State University on Monday, Jan. 28
