WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – North Carolina Central University junior transfer Glendon Mabe and junior Spencer Jones led the Eagles to a 10th place finish at the men’s golf season-opening Joe Agee Invitational, hosted by William & Mary on Monday and Tuesday in Williamsburg, Va.
Mabe (Ether, N.C.) carded an opening-round of 76 (+5) on the 6,837-yard course at The Williamsburg Club, finishing with an overall score of 237 (76, 80, 81) to place 45th in the individual standings.
Jones (Shelby, N.C.) closed the tournament with a 76 to end up one shot behind Mabe at 238 (82, 80, 76) to tie for 46th place.
NCCU freshman Garreth Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) shave 14 strokes off of his opening-round score to post a 76 in the second round on Monday. He placed 54th with a total score of 247 (90, 76, 81) in his first collegiate event.
Junior Andre Jones (Durham, N.C.) and freshman Michael Wilson (Flint, Mich.) placed 55th and 56th, respectively, for the Eagles. Jones carded a final score of 249 (84, 81, 84), while Wilson shot a 251 (84, 83, 84).
As a team, NCCU posted a team score of 965 (326, 317, 322) to beat out Hampton, which placed 11th at 1,014 (344, 333, 337). High Point won the team title by edging Radford by one stroke, 861-862.
The NCCU men’s golf team returns to action this weekend at the Black College Invitational at Browns Mill Golf Club in Atlanta.
