DURHAM, N.C. – With the 2012 regular season now complete, the North Carolina Central University baseball team embarks on its first journey into postseason play at the NCAA Division I level as the Eagles will face the third seeded Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in opening round action of the 2012 MEAC Baseball Championships beginning Wednesday, May 16. First pitch between NCCU and UMES is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
NCCU (18-30, 13-10 MEAC) enters the week as one of the hotter teams in the league with five consecutive wins including a program-first win over Campbell University. The Eagles were 0-14 against the Camels entering last Thursday’s Matchup.
UMES (12-37, 11-13 MEAC) earned its first double-digit win total under head coach Will Gardner and ended the regular season with a 5-4 walk-off win over the No. 1 seed from the Northern Division Delaware State who was 22-2 in conference play with both losses coming at the hands of the Hawks.
The winner of Wednesday night’s battle will move on in the winner’s bracket to take on the winner of the Delaware State against the fourth seed from the Southern Division Savannah State at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 17. The loser of each game will meet on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. to stave off elimination.
If NCCU can win on Wednesday and Thursday, the Eagles will get Friday off in preparation for the semifinals in the winner’s bracket on Saturday, May 19 at 1:00 p.m.
The MEAC Championship game will be Sunday, May 20 at 1:00 p.m.
Tickets for the double-elimination tournament are $5 per day for adults and $2 for youth. A tournament pass covering all five days costs $20 for adults and $8 for youth. Children 7 and under will be admitted free.
