NCCU vs. Longwood Broadcast Link (Game Central)
Heading into the Easter Weekend with a five-game winning streak in tow, the North Carolina Central University baseball program will step out-of-conference with a three-game series against the Lancers of Longwood University beginning with doubleheader action at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 7 from historic Durham Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
These two teams met last Tuesday, March 27 in a mid-week twinbill with LU taking game one 13-3, while NCCU won game two 4-2 to earn the first-ever victory over the Lancers in eight previous attempts.
Longwood leads the all-time series 7-1 and enters the weekend with a 15-15 overall record and have played away from Farmville, Va. only seven times at this point in the season amassing a 3-4 mark.
NCCU (9-22 overall, 6-6 MEAC) is coming off a 7-3 win over Virginia State University on Wednesday night and look to continue to improve under the tutelage of first-year head coach Jim Koerner.
Longwood junior Justin Lacy leads the team with a .416 batting average with three home runs and 20 RBI on year. His teammate Robby Newman is batting .387 on the year with 13 doubles, seven home runs and a team-best 28 RBI on the season.
Current MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Player of the Week, Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) enters the weekend series with a .357 batting average with four home runs and 19 RBI on the year. Sophomore backstop Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) leads the Eagles with 21 RBI in 30 games played.
Senior righty Sam Fulmer (Raleigh, N.C.) will get the nod for game one. Fulmer (2-2, 3.25 ERA) threw his first complete game of the season last week in the 18-3 game one victory over Florida A&M. Fulmer enters the ballgame with a team-high 35 strikeouts and only seven walks. Longwood will send right handed hurler Matt Gwaltney (0-3, 3.43 ERA) to the hill for game one. Gwaltney has 28 strikeouts on the year with just three walks on the year in 44-and-two-thirds innings pitched.
Game two will see the pitching matchup of NCCU’s Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) against Longwood’s Kyler Morgan (3-3, 4.00 ERA). Frye (1-4, 6.31 ERA) has thrown 41-and-one-third innings this year with 33 strikeouts after mowing down seven batters despite earning a no-decision against Florida A&M last Saturday. LU’s Morgan has thrown 45 innings this season and leads the Lancers with 31 strikeouts on the season.
NCCU has not announced the starter for game three, but Longwood will send right hander Zach Jordan (2-2, 6.12 ERA) to the hill for the series finale on Sunday.
Doubleheader action begins on Saturday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the historic Durham Athletic Park. Game two will take place 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest. The series finale will take place Sunday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m. as well.
The NCCU Sports Network will have wall-to-wall coverage of the three-game series between the Eagles and the Lancers.
