DURHAM, N.C. (
www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Fresh off the weekend sweep of Florida A&M, North Carolina Central University’s baseball team will take on former CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) foe Virginia State University in a Wednesday night non-conference matchup at 6:00 p.m. at the historic Durham Athletic Park. Admission is free to all baseball fans.
NCCU (8-22 overall, 6-6 MEAC) enters the week with a four-game winning streak and looking to add to it against its only NCAA Division II opponent this season. The longest streak of consecutive victories for the Eagles came from March 24-31 in 2007 when the maroon and gray won eight straight in its first season back. The last five-game winning streak for the program came from April 10-14 of that same year.
Virginia State (16-14 overall, 8-6 CIAA) is on a two-game losing skid after dropping the final two contests against St. Augustine’s this past weekend in Petersburg, Va. The Trojans are led by ninth-year head coach Merrill Morgan.
Wednesday night will mark meeting No. 12 between these two squads with the Eagles holding a 9-2 advantage over the Trojans. NCCU and VSU have met every year since the baseball program returned from its 30-plus year hiatus.
Returning to the hill for the Eagles is junior righty Gabe Brown (Rocky Mount, N.C.) making his third start of the season. Brown’s last outing came last week against Longwood in the second game of the twinbill. Brown (2-2, 5.92 ERA) earned the win and went five innings against the Lancers scattering three hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. He enters the week having logged 24-and-one-third innings with 12 strikeouts on the year.
Junior Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) has recovered nicely from a small slump as he leads the squad with a .358 batting average. The current MEAC Player of the Week has four home runs and 19 RBI on the season, just behind sophomore backstop Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) who has a team-high 21 RBI on the year.
The NCCU Sports Network will be on the air for Eagle Gameday built by Dayeco Construction Co. at 5:45 p.m. as play-by-play voice Chris Hooks will call the action from the Durham Athletic Park.
