DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University baseball team embarks on yet another crucial MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) series after splitting a pair of games with Bethune-Cookman University last week, the Eagles look to remain in second place in the Southern Division as they travel south to battle Savannah State University in the three game set taking place April 28-29 at Tiger Field in Savannah, Ga.
Doubleheader action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with a nine inning contest concluding with a seven inning affair to end the day. Sunday’s weekend finale will begin at 1:00 p.m. as well.
These two teams met nearly a month ago with Savannah State taking two of three closely contested ballgames. NCCU took game one 3-2, but the Eagles blew a 6-5 lead in second game of the series falling 8-7 and were shutout in the final game 3-0.
Savannah State (15-26 overall, 7-8 MEAC) is one game behind NCCU (13-28 overall, 9-8 MEAC) in the standings. Since 2008, the Tigers are 21-6 against the Eagles and are coming off a series win over Florida A&M.
Game one will see a rematch between NCCU right hander Sam Fulmer (Raleigh, N.C.) against SSU’s Kyle McGowin (5-2, 2.58 ERA). McGowin is the current MEAC Pitcher of the Week after his 15 strikeout performance against the Rattlers last weekend and has amassed 75 K’s on the year in 73-and-one-thirds innings pitched. In the last matchup between these two Fulmer despite the no-decision allowed only one earned run and struck out seven batters as Gavin Guarrera (Webster, N.Y.) earned the victory in relief.
The second game of the day will be a righty/left matchup as Savannah State head coach Carlton Hardy will send sophomore right hander Tommy Freeman (0-7, 5.87 ERA) to the mound, while NCCU head coach Jim Koerner will hand the ball to left handed Michael Romano (Spotsylvania, Va.) for his fourth start of the year. Romano (1-2, 6.06 ERA) started in game two of last week’s twinbill and pitched brilliantly despite the no decision. In his last two appearances Romano has thrown 12 innings allowed 16 hits and only six earned runs with four strikeouts and the Eagles are 2-0 in that span.
In the series finale, SSU’s Rexford Davis heads to the hill for his eighth start of the year, while NCCU has not determined a pitcher at this time. The last time the Eagles faced Davis the freshman righty pitched seven innings allowed one hit and struck out six in a 3-0 shutout victory for the Tigers.
The NCCU Sports Network will have wall-to-wall coverage of the critical weekend series beginning at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday afternoon with Eagle Gameday built by Dayeco Construction Co. Play-by-play voice of the Eagles Chris Hooks will call the action from Tiger Field as NCCU looks to stay in second place in the MEAC’s Southern Division.
