DURHAM, N.C. (
www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Following the weekend split against Bethune-Cookman University, the North Carolina Central University baseball team makes the short trip up to the commonwealth of Virginia to take on Norfolk State University in a mid-week non-conference matchup for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch from Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
NCCU (13-27, 9-8 MEAC) is looking to build off the momentum of the extra inning victory in game two on Saturday afternoon as Carter Williamson’s RBI double down the right field line sent the Eagles to the 4-3 win over MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) power Bethune-Cookman to earn the doubleheader split after blowing a 4-0 lead in the first game of the day.
The Eagles are still in second place in the MEAC Southern Division, as is Tuesday’s opponent, Norfolk State, (14-21, 10-7 MEAC) in the Northern Division. The Spartans just completed the weekend sweep of Coppin State and have won five out of their last seven contests after being swept by North Division leader Delaware State.
Tuesday’s contest will be meeting No. 11 between these two programs with the Spartans holding a 9-1 advantage on the Eagles. The last time these two teams met NCCU earned its first win over Norfolk State in game two of a doubleheader 5-4 on April 28, 2010.
Sophomore Cameron Day leads the green and gold with a .357 batting average with four doubles, four triples, and 16 RBI. Rafael Colon tops the team with 11 doubles on the year batting at a .325 clip for the Spartans.
NCCU continues to be led by junior Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) as he is hitting .371 on the year with eight doubles, four triples, and four home runs to go along with 22 RBI. Sophomore Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) needs four more RBI to tie the modern day record set by Justin Goodson in 2007 with 38. Diaz needs six more hits to break sophomore Dylan Drayton’s (Raleigh, N.C.) modern day record of 58 hits set last season. Sophomore Troy Marrow (Lutherville, Md.) is tied with former Eagle Oliver Jenkins with the most doubles in a season with 11 on the year, needing just one more to set a new mark in the program’s short history.
On the hill, head coach Jim Koerner will send out junior righty Ruben Rios (Fortuna, Calif.) for his fifth start of the year. Rios (1-2, 9.79) has thrown 49-and-two-thirds innings this season with 19 strikeouts to his credit.
The NCCU Sports Network will have full coverage of the mid-week showdown at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24 as Eagle Gameday built by Dayeco Construction Co. will count down to the first pitch of the contest. Play-by-play voice of the NCCU Sports Network Chris Hooks will call all the live action from Marty Miller Field.
