MEAC Player of the Week Announcement

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Junior Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) and freshman Deion Doubledee (Wilson, N.C.) members of the North Carolina Central University baseball team were honored by the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) for their performances on the diamond last week as Diaz was named Player of the Week and Doubledee was selected as the Rookie of the Week the conference announced on Monday.

As a team, the Eagles went 4-1, including their first-ever three-game conference sweep at the NCAA’s Division I level as a member of the MEAC over Florida A&M.  NCCU carries a four-game winning streak into play this week.

Last week, Diaz batted a stellar .556 (10-for-18) at-the-dish, but went 7-for-11 (.636) with a double, three triples, an inside-the-park home run, five RBI, and eight runs scored against the Rattlers in the three-game set.  The outfielder struck out one time during the week, drawing three walks.  In the series finale against Florida A&M, Diaz went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, three runs scored, and three RBI in the 9-5 sweep-clinching victory over the Rattlers.

Doubledee finished the week 4-for-11 (.364) at-the-plate with his first career double, two runs scored and two RBI.  In the game one loss to Longwood last Tuesday, the freshman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, but his double came in the three-run third inning against Florida A&M in game one of the series driving in two runs as the Eagles went on to the 18-3 victory.

Fans can join NCCU head baseball coach Jim Koerner and Diaz on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Champps inside the Streets of Southpoint for Eagle Talk as they join play-by-play voice Chris Hooks to talk about one of the best overall weeks in the modern era of NCCU baseball.

The streaking Eagles get back to action on Wednesday, April 4 in the friendly confines of the historic Durham Athletic Park in Durham, N.C. as NCCU (8-22 overall, 6-6 MEAC) battles former CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) foe the Trojans of Virginia State University at 6:00 p.m.  The NCCU Sports Network will be on the air at 5:45 p.m. with Eagle Gameday built by Dayeco Construction Co. to countdown to first pitch of Wednesday night’s affair.
