DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Following Tuesday’s night doubleheader split against Longwood University, the North Carolina Central University Eagles head back down to  sunny Florida to take on Southern Division foe Florida A&M University in a three-game MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) weekend set with twinbill action slated for Saturday, April 31 and the series finale on Sunday,  April 1, both beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida A&M and NCCU have currently met nine times since 2009 with the Eagles 1-8 against the Rattlers.  The one and only win came in the 22-5 the series finale last season in Tallahassee, Fla. on March 9, 2011.  NCCU is 1-5 all-time at Moore-Kittles Field.

The Rattlers (5-23 overall, 3-3 MEAC) are currently in third place in the Southern Division ahead of NC A&T (2-4) and NCCU (3-6).  FAMU enters the weekend set on a four-game losing streak.

NCCU (5-22, 3-6 MEAC) is looking to carry the momentum from Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Longwood in the final game of the twinbill, the first-ever victory over the Lancers in nine previous tries.  Junior Gabe Brown (Rocky Mount, N.C.) earned his second win as an Eagle going five innings strong and scattering three hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts and three walks.

Over the last five games NCCU has gone 2-3, with sophomores Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) and Troy Marrow (Lutherville, Md.) leading the way offensively.  Williamson is batting .462 going 6-for-13 at the plate with a triple, double, a run scored, and four RBI.  Marrow is batting 5-for-15 (.333) with four runs scored a double and two RBI.

Head coach Jim Koerner will keep the same rotation for Saturday’s doubleheader sending right hander Sam Fulmer (Raleigh, N.C.) to the hill for the nine-inning affair in game one.  Fulmer put on a spectacular performance against Savannah State in game one last Saturday going seven-and-one-third innings surrendering just four hits, allowing one earned run and striking out seven batters in a 3-2 Eagle win.  Fulmer is 1-2 on the year and has thrown 35-and-one-third innings this year and sports a 4.08 ERA with a team-high 29 strikeouts and only six walks.

Junior righty Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) will make his eighth start of the season in game two which is scheduled for seven innings.  Frye wasn’t at his best last week against Savannah State, but helped put the Eagles in position for the win in the first game on Sunday going five-and-one-third innings with eight hits allowed and three strikeouts.  NCCU blew a 6-5 advantage to drop the opener on Sunday 8-7.  Frye is 1-4 on the season and is third on the team throwing 35 innings this year while also sitting second on the team with 26 strikeouts.

The starter for game three has not been decided upon yet according to Koerner.

As a team, Florida A&M is second in the MEAC batting .275 as a team, but the Rattlers sit ninth in pitching with a team ERA of 9.03.  Collectively, FAMU boasts seven batters with a batting average over .300.

Outfielder Jarryd Reid is one of the MEAC’s top hitters batting .390 on the season with 23 hits on the year.  Reid tops the Rattlers with six doubles, while his teammate, Aaron Smith, is just behind him batting .383 on the season with five doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI.

Junior outfielder Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) still leads the maroon and gray at-the-dish batting .327 on the season and is still second in the conference with three home runs and first in the MEAC in total bases with 46.

The NCCU Sports Network will bring every pitch of the weekend series live beginning at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday with Eagle Gameday built by Dayeco Construction Co.  Play-by-play voice of the Eagles Chris Hooks will call the action of the weekend set from Moore-Kittles Field.  Fans can also follow the MEAC weekend series on twitter by following @NCCUAthletics and by using the #NCCUbaseball hashtag and can also interact with Hooks during the broadcast by sending him and email to whooks@nccu.edu
