FARMVILLE, VA. (
www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Since bringing the baseball program back in 2007, North Carolina Central University had not beaten Longwood University since the two teams began playing one another in 2008, but on Tuesday, March 27 at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium, the Eagles lost game one 13-3, but took game two 4-2 earning their first-ever win over the Lancers in eight previous tries.
Game one was a lopsided affair from the start as the Lancers came out hitting on all cylinders by scoring nine runs in the first three innings of the game, six of which came in the bottom of the third when Longwood hit two doubles and the Eagle pitchers walked four batters in the frame to take a 9-1 lead.
NCCU plated a run in the top of the third when Deion Doubledee (Wilson, N.C.) came around to score on a Longwood error after leading the inning off with a single.
The Lancers added a pair of runs in the fourth and the sixth innings to add on their final runs, but the Eagles weren’t done yet.
NCCU scored two in the top of the seventh to put the final tally at 13-3.
Despite the loss in game one, Doubledee finished 2-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored along with fellow freshman teammate Cory Williamson (Greensboro, N.C.) who went 2-for-4 with his first career RBI.
The first three hitters in the Longwood lineup (Matt Dickason, Robby Newman, and Justin Lacy) combined to go 8-for-14 with six runs scored and six RBI in the win.
The second contest, which was slated for seven innings and saw the Eagles put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the first inning only to fall short which was the only offensive threat through the first three frames for either team.
Longwood drew first blood in the bottom of the fourth when Lacy led off with a double to right center and later scored on a throwing error by NCCU which gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
The maroon and gray swung back with four runs in the top of the fifth inning on four hits and were aided by a Lancer error. It all began on a Michael Romano (Spotslyvania, Va.) single to right center followed up by a one out double by sophomore Tyson Simpson (Burgaw, N.C.). A Lancer fielding error saw Dylan Drayton (Raleigh, N.C.) reach base driving in Romano and then Etienne Farquharson (Inagua, Bahamas) brought in the second run of the frame on a sacrifice bunt. The final two runs of the fifth were driven in by Troy Marrow who doubled to right field putting the Eagles up 4-1.
NCCU’s pitching duo of Gabe Brown (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and Gavin Guarrera (Webster, N.Y.) held Longwood to one run and one hit the rest of the way to hang on for the 4-2 win.
Brown earned the victory for the Eagles moving his record to 2-2 going five innings and striking out three batters, while Guarrera earned his third save of the season.
On the day, Marrow led the maroon and gray at the plate going 3-for-6 with a double and two RBI. Doubledee also went 3-for-6 with two runs on the day.
NCCU (5-22 overall, 3-6 MEAC) looks to carry this momentum into the weekend as they travel down to the Sunshine state to battle the Rattlers of Florida A&M University on Saturday and Sunday, March 31- April 1 at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee, Fla.
