www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Day one of the Campbell Invitational Tournament saw the host Camels sweep the Eagles of North Carolina Central University in doubleheader action winning 15-2, 6-1 on Friday afternoon at Taylor Field in Buies Creek, N.C.
The first game of the afternoon saw Campbell make a statement in the bottom of the first inning by scoring 10 runs on nine hits including three Eagle errors in the frame as the Camels to bolted out to a 10-0 lead that it would never relinquish.
In the top of the second inning, NCCU mustered up a run following back-to-back to singles from Dylan Drayton (Raleigh, N.C.) and Etienne Farquharson (Inagua, Bahamas). Drayton came around to score on a wild pitch to make 10-1
In the ninth inning, the Eagles put the final run on the board around another set of consecutive hits by Drayton and Farquharson. Tyson Simpson Jr.’s (Burgaw, N.C.) RBI groundout brought in Drayton to put the score at its final resting place at 15-2.
Junior Ruben Rios (Fortuna, Calif.) pitched the last seven innings for the Eagles to keep the Camel bats silent following the explosion in the first inning.
NCCU finished the first contest with just seven hits as Drayton and Farquharson combined to go 4-for-7 with two runs scored and a walk.
Campbell pounded out 22 hits in the win as eight starters recorded at least one hit on the day led by Ben McQuown’s 4-for-5 effort at the plate.
Game two was changed to a seven inning affair as the host Camels pushed six runs in the first two innings and were able to hold on from there.
Harnett County product Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) pitched a complete game for the Eagles striking out four batters and settled down after the rough start to keep NCCU in the contest.
The Eagle bats were quieted by Heath Bowers who allowed only one hit in his first collegiate start for the Camels.
Throughout game two, the maroon and gray mustered only two hits with Drayton going 1-for-3 and Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) drove in the game’s only run in the sixth to record NCCU’s lone run of the game and giving the junior outfielder his team-leading 10th RBI of the season.
Overall on the day, Drayton led the Eagles going a combined 3-for-6 on the day with two runs scored. Farquharson and Diaz also recorded two hits on the day.
NCCU (1-9) is now 0-11 all-time against Campbell and will have the day off on Saturday due to the forecast of inclement weather and will get back to action on Sunday, March 4 at 12:00 p.m. against the Crusaders of Holy Cross from Taylor Field to complete the weekend.
