DURHAM, N.C. (
www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – As the calendar turns to March, the North Carolina Central University baseball team hits the road for the first time in the 2012 season as the Eagles make the short trek to Buies Creek, N.C., to compete in the Campbell Invitational Tournament on March 2-4 at Taylor Field.  The field includes host Campbell University and Holy Cross.

Due to the possibility of inclement weather on Saturday, the schedule has changed for the weekend event as NCCU will now play a doubleheader against Campbell on Friday, March 2 beginning at 3:00 p.m. with game one being a nine-inning affair followed up by a seven-inning contest just 30 minutes after the first game.

NCCU has met Campbell nine times prior to this season with the Camels leading the all-time series at 9-0.

The original contests slated for Saturday, March 3 have all been moved to Sunday, March 4 starting at 12:00 first pitch with NCCU and Holy Cross meeting for the first time in program history.

Invitational host Campbell will take on Holy Cross following the first game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. and will finish off the event with a second matchup in the originally scheduled slot of Monday at 4:00 p.m.

First year head coach Jim Koerner will send Harnett County native Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) to hill in the first game on Friday.  Frye put the Eagles in position to win in last Saturday’s first game against NJIT as he went seven innings strong allowing only three earned runs and striking out seven Highlander batters as NCCU went on to win 8-5, earning Koerner his first win as a Division I head coach.

Game two will see Gavin Guarerra (Webster, N.Y.) take the hill for the final contest on Friday.  Guarrera struck out a season high-seven batters despite taking the loss in game two of last weekend’s twinbill against NJIT.

On Sunday, March 4 sophomore Jacob Russell (Winston-Salem, N.C.) will look to continue to establish himself as the series finale starter in the Eagles lone contest against Holy Cross.

NCCU (1-7) is led at the dish by junior Luis Diaz (Geneva, N.Y.) who tops the squad batting .389 with three home runs and nine RBI.  Diaz also leads with a team-high 11 hits.

Junior Nate Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) is not far behind batting .381 with three doubles, while also a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases.
