BETHUNE-COOKMAN RALLIES TO DEFEAT NCCU, 3-0

Arrufat Gathers 12 Kills in the Loss

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - In spite of battling through 14 ties and five lead changes, the North Carolina Central University volleyball team could not overpower the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman, who rallied to a three-set (25-12, 25-16, 27-21) win over the Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 7 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

The Eagles relied on the offensive efforts of sophomore Dayanna Arrufat and senior Christine Anthony, who finished the contest with 12 kills and 9 kills, respectively.  Contributing to the offensive effort with 30 assists was sophomore Alice Genna. Anthony added 12 digs to the defense, followed by Genna who finished with six. 

In the set one of the contest, the Eagles started off strong winning the first three points before the Wildcats went on a 9-1 run and forced a NCCU timeout.  B-CU continued to command the match, hitting another strong run to finish the first match of the game holding the Eagles to 12 points with only one tie and one lead change.

After dropping the first set, the Eagles could not find their offensive edge as the squad hit .065 with 12 kills and 10 errors on 31 attempts.  The Wildcats suffered a decline in their offensive effort as well, with eight kills and four errors on 25 attempts. Nonetheless, B-CU commanded the set and paced to 25-16 win with two lead changes and five ties.

In the third and final set of the match, NCCU refueled its offensive fire refusing to end the match without a fight.  The two squads battled through two lead changes and eight ties.

A NCCU kill from sophomore Ashley McCarthy tied the game at 10-10 and the two teams went point-for-point until the Wildcats pulled ahead 17-15 and went on a 8-6  run to close out the game with a final score of 25-21.

Janeen Davis led the Bethune-Cookman offensive with 10 kills, while Krysta Gardner added nine kills to the win.  Wildcat setter Monica Lowe collected 21 of the 23 assists.

On the defensive end, Jennifer Jimenez added nine digs, while Aria Cormier dominated at the net with five blocks.

The Eagles will travel to Savannah Ga., on Friday Oct. 12 where they will take continue conference play as they take on Savannah State.

NCCU drops to 3-18 on the season and 1-2 within Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, while Bethune-Cookman improved to 3-18 on the season and 2-1 in the MEAC.
