NCCU VOLLEYBALL CRUISES TO SWEEP OVER SAVANNAH STATE

Eagles Post Best Hitting Percentage in More Than Four Seasons

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team posted its best hitting percentage in more than four seasons during a dominating 3-0 sweep over Savannah State University on Friday night in Savannah, Ga.

The Eagles amassed 35 kills with only five errors on 60 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.

The NCCU offense was topped by rookie Christine Anthony with nine kills, while sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon added eight kills and redshirt freshman Denni Johnson contributed seven kills. Sophomore setter Alice Genna distributed 19 assists.

Defensively, freshman Marilyn Sherbondy tallied a match-high 12 digs, while junior Kalin Russell collected four blocks, including three solo rejections, along with five kills.

NCCU held a slim 8-4 lead in the opening set before scoring 17 of the next 20 points for a 25-7 set victory.

In the second set, the Eagles notched the first eight points and the last nine points for a dominating 25-5 win.

NCCU closed out the sweep with a 25-13 third-set win.

With the match victory, the Eagles even their conference record at 2-2 and are now 4-18 overall. Savannah State falls to 0-24.

NCCU hits the road and returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 14 at South Carolina State University.
