Box Score NCCU v. UNC Asheville Statistics
DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – In spite of senior Shantel Moore achieving her fifth double-figure scoring outing of the season, the North Carolina Central University volleyball team could not find success on their home court on Tuesday, Sept. 20 as they fell in three sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-20) to the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville in Durham, N.C.
Moore finished the night hitting 21 percent with 11 kills, while attacking leader freshman Dayanna Arrufat, rounded out the match with eight kills. Sophomore setter Jzima-Malaki Kalao circulated 22 assists, as senior Raven King collected seven digs and senior Tasha-Gaye Richards accumulated two solos blocks while assisting on two.
The Eagles amassed 30 kills, 26 digs, three service aces and eight team blocks.
UNC Asheville’s offense was led by Cindi Miller, who finished the night with 13 kills. Durham native Jaimie Dorfman distributed 13 assists and achieved three service aces in the win, while Alex Stewart dug seven NCCU attacks. Holly Shelton and Anna Moore assisted on three blocks each.
The Bulldogs collected 33 kills, 26 digs, seven service aces and seven team blocks.
The maroon and gray began the match with a slow start, falling into a 6-1 deficient in the opening minutes of play. Following a NCCU timeout, the Eagles attempted to gather their composure only to tumble into a 10-point deficit.
UNCA attempted to pace to a set win, until a service ace by King sparked a 9-3 NCCU run. But, the Bulldogs were determine to take set one of the match as they achieved five kills within eight plays to seize a 25-20 win.
Set two began at a more comparable level, with NCCU staying within a two-point margin. However, a timeout by NCCU kick started a 9-5 UNCA run for a seven-point led for a score of 18-11.
NCCU was able to gather five additional points before the Bulldogs took set two, 25-16.
After a 10-minute intermission, NCCU began set three with fire. Taking and maintaining the led until UNCA tied the set at 9-9. But, a kill by Meredith Foster placed the Bulldogs ahead.
NCCU fought to regain the lead, but the UNCA determination was strong and the Bulldogs were able to outscore the Eagles 10-8.
Two consecutive kills by Arrufat forced an UNCA timeout. The Bulldogs took two minutes to regain their composure and pace a 5-2 run for a 25-20 win.
The Tuesday night loss drops NCCU to 0-12 on the season, while UNC Asheville advances to 6-6.
NCCU continues its three-game homestand with a Friday, Sept. 23 matchup against North Carolina A&T. The 7:00 p.m. contest marks the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match of the 2011 season.
